Dr. Ira Longterm, the award-winning economist, has decided to turn his full attention to his beloved Dixie. He recently retired from his directorship at The Pipedream Group, a think tank he founded. Longterm is the author of two classic texts: Broke Like Me and How To Convert Your Bank Overdrafts Into IRAs.
"Spend it before it's gone," is his motto. Many Americans follow his sage advice.
The good doctor is one of the few economists in the nation who work pro bono/ad hoc. He contributed this column today - as he will each Friday - to counsel Dixiecats on improving the local economy, especially the political economy.
Dr. Longterm's White Paper - June 8, 2007
The St. George city council discussed the new proposed budget yesterday. The total is $304 million ferns (Federal Reserve notes.) A million ferns here and a million ferns there, and pretty soon you're talking a lot of money.
The city rakes in big money, but it certainly needs revenue enhancement to spread the burden. One way to do that would be to turn the roundabouts into money makers by selling advertising signs in them. They could be neon and pricey. They would replace the need for flowers and their costly maintenance. Each roundabout could hold several signs and profit a cool 100,000 ferns. So, multiply the number of roundabouts by $100,000 - there's your revenue.
These funds could be designated for the fire and police departments. In a political effort to get this rolling, ask your fire and police folks how they like the idea.
Until next Friday, don't forget to keep your money in circulation.
